John Adams Exodus 20:12 www.emmanuelcroydon.org.uk
Good.
I wonder if you've ever thought, how much do my parents weigh? How much do my parents weigh? If your parents are here with you, maybe just turn to them, just have a quick look at them.
How much do they weigh? Did you know, did you know, the reason I'm asking you about this is because this is actually a biblical concern.
In fact, it's there in the fifth commandment.
The fifth commandment says...
Honor your father and mother.
And actually the word used for honor is to do with weight.
How much value or significance, how weighty or important do we think they are? And so to honor our parents means that they are important to us, that their dignity and their well-being matter to us.
Now, let's just get clear.
We're going to be thinking about the fifth commandment throughout the service this morning.
Let's get clear who we're talking about.
Many people have a mum and a dad, and that needs no further explanation.
Maybe some of us have lost one or even both of our parents, or we're being looked after by someone who wasn't our father or mother at birth.
What we're about to say, I think, applies for anyone who's got the job of a parent or carer.
So whoever that is for you, let's include them under mother and father for the purposes of this commandment.
But honor your father and mother is not totally straightforward.
And so it's worth thinking about how do we honor our mother and father? And in a moment, we're going to meet a young boy called Paul.
And he's had some situations in his life which he needs a bit of help with to work out how to honor his parents.
Just before we do that, though, I think it might be helpful to think about honor.
in three ways.
Honouring our parents means doing what they say.
They ask you to do something and you do it, like you always do, you know.
It means doing what they say.
Honoring your parents might mean speaking to them in a way that they would like to be spoken to.
Good.
