Episode 97 - Shakeups & Earthquakes in Walt Disney World

I literally just hit stop, like, two minutes ago recording, and I got a notification from the Discord group.

And I got a notification from the news page that I felt I needed to start recording again.

Um, this is one of the more bizarre news stories I've ever seen coming out of Disney World.

And I'm just gonna read this in real time.

Um, an earthquake was just felt at Walt Disney World, a rarity for the Florida-based theme park.

Preliminary data suggests that there was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake about 73 miles west northwest of Cuba.

The quake could be felt through Florida, including at the Walt Disney World Resort.

The earthquake occurred at 2:00 PM sharp, and the tremors were felt in Central Florida just about a minute or so.

And because of that, some attractions were impacted, and the following attractions are listed as being temporarily unavailable just minutes after the earthquake was felt.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, The Barnstormer, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Tron Lightcycle Run, Space Mountain, and Seven Dwarves Mine Train.

Other attractions were already closed before the earthquake was felt.

It's unclear if the current closures are due to the earthquake or not.

Shaking could be felt at Walt Disney World due to the large earthquake.

Blog Mickey has reached out to Disney for further information on any impacts on the resort.

And this is a breaking news, and we're gonna get more information as it comes out.

Um, ride closures due to weather is nothing new at Disney.

Generally, it's due to weather and, you know, hurricanes and stuff like that during hurricane seasons.

But an earthquake? Sure, at Disneyland on the left coast, 'cause California and Californians have to deal with earthquakes, I'm not saying on a regular basis, but more frequently than people in Florida and Florida theme parks, but wow.

Um, I'm going to pull up the My Disney Experience app and see what's, what's listed and posted wait time-wise, 'cause wow.

An earthquake in the Magic Kingdom, because all those attractions were listed in the Magic Kingdom.

Yep, Barnstormer, Big Thunder.

See, some attractions are still open as of this recording time, 3:09 on a Monday.

You'll, you'll hear why I'm recording on a Monday once we get into the episode.

Uh, Buzz Lightyear is still up.

Um, Country Bear Jamboree is closed.

Uh, fireworks are still as ago as of right now.

Uh, Dumbo is going, or it's still up.

Haunted Mansion is still up.

Jungle Cruise.

So it only looks like a handful of attractions are down, and it looks like they were the ones listed.

And it seem ...

Hmm.

Yeah, the ones in Magic Kingdom that I listed earlier are the only attractions that are impacted by anything right now, and it's unclear if it was due to an earthquake.

Just wow.

And I'm looking in Epcot.

It doesn't seem ...

Um, Remy's Ratatouille is temporarily closed.

Again, I don't know if this is due to the earthquake that happened at or shortly after 2:00 PM.

So Remy is down as of today, June 8th.

Let me head over to Hollywood Studios.

Sorry, I'm doing this in real time.

So, uh, again, this is a breaking news story.

Um, of course, cast members are on, or I have no doubt, are on top of everything and taking care of anything that needs to happen.

Hollywood Studios looks like it's business as usual.

So, uh, and then we'll, we'll check out Animal Kingdom.

Yeah, Animal Kingdom is bus- uh, business as usual.

So at, outside of Remy's Ratatouille being down in Epcot, which again, we don't know if it has anything to do with the earthquake that happened at 2:00 PM today, um, Magic Kingdom is the most impacted park in the Walt Disney World Resort.

And that it ...

And we only have six attractions being closed.

And again, we don't know if it is because of an earthquake, and those six attractions are Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, The Barnstormer, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Tron Lightcycle Run, Space Mountain, and Seven Dwarves Mine Train.

Though it is interesting.

With the exception of Tiana's Bayou Adventure, the other five attractions are roller coasters of some sort.

So I don't know if that has anything to do with ...

Like, if, if that's just a random happenstance or not.

I, so ...

I don't know.

Um, th- now this could just be a, a common safety measure.

It's like they, they need to check the integrity of the track to make sure everything is, is safe.

Because I mean, it's like this doesn't happen a lot at Walt Disney World, but like I mentioned, this happens on a r- more regular basis out on the left coast at, at Disneyland.

So they know how to handle that out at Disneyland, so I'm sure there are procedures and protocols that have to be followed after this.

So, uh, so like, again, like I was talking about, cast members know what they're doing.

And Disney, they're not gonna take any shortcuts when it comes to safety.

But again, this is a breaking news story.

I had just stopped recording, but when I saw that, it's like, "Oh, I probably need to hit that big red button and start rolling again." And, uh, we'll drop this at the beginning of the podcast and, uh, we'll get into the, uh, regularly scheduled podcast unless, oh, I don't know, um, locusts show up at, uh, SeaWorld.

But then again, I don't know, maybe that's a new feature at SeaWorld.

Uh, but, uh, I'll look into it and, uh, I'll let you know.
