Rapsody breaks down her fantastic new album 'God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops.' Learn about how her trip to Africa inspired its themes and sound, the reverence she has for hip hop, and why she views…
Yeah, I was DMing with them when your album dropped, and we were talking about it, to your point of what you said just a second ago about the freedom.
Morale before it, and then there's emotional and therapeutic work, and there was a unshedding of a lot of weight.
And then you get a GNX, and there's a confidence, a newfound earned authenticity and confidence.
It's exactly that.
I tell people I for real had to completely get naked.
And I had to take off and let go of other people's ideas or thoughts of what the world thought, what was successful, what was...
What was right, what should be supported, what should be praised, what was dope, what was not dope, how you should show up, your family expectations, friends.
You got to let all of that go.
And I think Kendrick can probably affirm that in his own walk.
That you got to get naked and then redress yourself.
Like, who am I? What do I like? What do I believe in? You know, how do I see the world? Like, and operate from that place.
And it's like the freedom that you have because, you know, you really just walk in your walk and what feels good to you, what is aligned with you, what is assigned with you.
When I was walking in, I was on the phone.
I didn't mean to be rude, but I was talking to Ab Soul, and I was telling him that.
It was just like, because he was like, man, I can't remember in this moment what word he used, but for me, it was like, I got to go back to 2005. when I got into this because I loved it and I didn't, I wasn't thinking about anything.
I just wanted to make something dope.
And that was honest.
So it was like, that was what I was in more evolved before anybody could take my mind and my ideas or make me overthink.
You know, I was, it's a knowing that you have, like, I know who I am now.
I know who I am, not in relation to anybody else, just me.
