Mark KennedyHostLiam MooreGuestMark ScuttGuestso um looking at the looking at the two options a client would have when he's hiring a machine you've got operated and you've got self-drive now the key difference is self-drive you're hiring the machine for you or one of your nominated members of staff or someone else to to drive whether that be a dump or an excavator If you're hiring it operated, you're getting a combined rate, an hourly rate, for an operator to come along with the machine and operate it for you.
So if you've got a muck shift on and you get an operated 20-tonner, you're going to get a man in the seat and you're going to get the machine, the 20-ton machine, to do the job.
So self-drive, you get a weekly rate, a single weekly rate per week based on a 50-hour week predominantly.
An operated rate is a combined rate for a 9- or 10-hour day or whatever you might be doing, 12s, you might be doing nights.
If you yourself are a small contractor and you've got some really good guys that you know and love and trust in the seats, you might put those guys to work by hiring the machine self-drive.
But ultimately, if you're more of a management company and you've got works to do, you might order the equipment in operated.

example, I'll ask you this one before you say, is that the terms and conditions are everyone knows.

is that when you hire a piece of equipment, self-drive or operated, you as the hirer are responsible for the state of the equipment.

However, the argument always comes is who actually is responsible? So if I've taken, and this is where the argument always comes into, like if I hire a limousine and drive it myself, and take you two clowns around, and I crash it, then surely that's my result.

But if the other is, Liam, you're taking me and Mark out, and you come with the limousine, if you are sending someone, is that your fault or mine? How do you sit on that?
It's definitely an interesting question that one Mark and I've actually been involved in that myself on a couple of occasions and say it can get quite messy and people say oh no I've hired you with the machine so therefore that bit of concrete over there that you've damaged you're going to pay for it and you go no no you haven't read the small print I'm not trying to be...
I got out, looked at it, and I've gone, well, that's, you know, again, it was another hired piece of kit.
