This week I sat down with Brian, a retired Navy SEAL who spent 20 years in the teams and is now back home in Texas. I met him at my roping clinic, and I’ve wanted to get him on the podcast ever since.
We talk about what pulled a Houston baseball player and college bareback rider into the SEALs, and what BUDS and Hell Week are really like. We also get into how much SEAL training has in common with roping: breaking things down step by step, controlling your breathing, and telling yourself what to do instead of what not to do. Whether it’s a SEAL op or a short round, it comes back to seeing your start.
Brian also opens up about the hard part, which is learning to turn off the fight-or-flight switch after deployments. He tells how a mentor, therapy, church, and getting back around horses helped him get there. We finish with the Liberty Loyalty Foundation’s American Hero Celebration, November 6-8 in Fort Worth, and how you can get involved.
