Evening Service 27th September 2026 - Pastor Stuart Keir
As we come and look at these verses together, let me share with you some quotes on a mother's love and the lengths to which it will go.
Agatha Christie once wrote, "A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in this world.
It dares all things and crushes down all that stands in its path." Louisa May Alcott in Little Women, she wrote this, "The clocks were striking midnight and the rooms were very still as a figure glided quietly from bed to bed, smoothing a coverlet here, settling a pillow there, and pausing to look long and tenderly at each unconscious face.
To kiss each with lips that mutually bless, that mutually blessed, and to pray the fervent prayers which only a mother utters." The poet Maya Angelou, and I suspect my own children would see something of their own mother in this [laughs].
She said, "To describe my mother's love would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power [laughs], or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow." Then J.K.
Rowling in Harry Potter, she wrote, "He," that is the evil wol- wizard Voldemort for those of you who follow the franchise [laughs], "He didn't realize that love as powerful as your mother's for you leaves its own mark." But then, then my favorite of them all, former Bishop of Liverpool, J.C.
Ryle in commentating on these very verses, he wrote these words, "However, however desperate the case appears," listen to this, "However desperate the case appears, where there is a praying mother, there is always hope." Now, I'm sure the same could be said to be true for fathers and for grandparents, for siblings, too.
But the emphasis, the emphasis here is on a mother's love.
And you'll see on the screen there, if you can, that's quite small, isn't it? You can see it.
You'll see on the screen there that that is in first the-- That is in fact the first of three headings that I'll use to guide us through these, uh, verses that are before us this evening.
What do we have here? Number one, a mother's love.
Then number two, a, a, a shocking response to that love, a seemingly shocking response anyway.
And then number three, a vital lesson for us all.
So that's where we're going, but first then, mother's love.
