Um, but for example, when our daughters were quite a bit younger, I remember how excited and impatient they'd be before a big occasion.
Uh, it might be the fun and games, the fun games and yummy treats at a friend's birthday party.
Uh, it might be the gifts and pretty dresses at their birthday party.
[laughing] Uh, it might also be, uh, visits to the grandparents' farm.
[laughing] Uh, so Emily, the cow.
[laughing] Feeding the baby lamb.
Aw.
[laughing] Riding with their grandfather on the four-wheeler.
[laughing] Uh, playing at the beach.
You can see, yeah, Victorian beach, it's... [laughing] Um, now over the years, I've also looked to various exciting events, uh, including things like finishing school, uh, meeting and eventually marrying a godly woman- Aw ... uh, welcoming, uh, each of our daughters into the world.
Something I'm still looking forward to is, uh, not owing the bank money for our house.
[laughing] Now, how about you? What are you looking forward to? Either next week, next month, you don't know when.
What, what are you longing for? What are you excited about? What are you afraid you might, that, you know, might not happen? All right.
Maybe I won't ask you to call it out, but, uh, I think it's fair to say we live much of our lives looking forward to something, don't we? But if we're honest, none of these hopes are a sure thing.
They're not guaranteed.
We may miss out on something, or we might be let down by the reality of something else.
It's not quite what we thought it would be.
And again, if we're honest, I think many, if not most of our hopes are, they're very self-centered, aren't they? It's about what we get.
What can we enjoy? Education, family, employment, stuff, recreation.
Now, these are all good gifts from God, and so they're to be received thankfully and directed towards His purposes.
But I think for many of us, much of the time, again, if we're honest, uh, a variation on an old saying is also true.
We can be so earthly minded- that we are of no or little heavenly kingdom use.
So perhaps a better question than what are we looking forward to is what should we be looking forward to? Because there is one absolutely certain guaranteed to happen event that will involve everyone who's ever lived.
