And when I inherited it, the leather was all perished in the top, the wood was worn, the varnish was worn out.

apply a bit of varnish, a couple of coats, weave the leather back on, and it's now a stool that you can sit on.

And so when you're doing restoration work, the temptation is always to cut corners, to not do the job properly, to try and find a way of doing it more quickly or more cheaply or less painfully.

And so, I take it when you look at somebody's work and you see what kind of restoration work they do, you can learn something about the person.

It may look good at the time, it's amazing what a coat of paint and a bit of putty can do, but over time, through use, the quality of the workmanship will be exposed.

Now, if you do it yourself and you cut the corners and you kind of just hope that it would work out all right, you've only got yourself to blame.

But if you pay good money to someone else to restore, to renovate, to fix up, then you're kind of upset if they betray your trust, if they don't deliver on what they said, if they've done shoddy work that doesn't last.

Trust with big things like our lives, our plans, our futures, with all that we are and all that we have for all eternity.
