It was Queenland Cup final week with NPL Premiers Lions FC and Gold Coast Knights both making it a Premiership and Cup double with wins at Spencer Park on Saturday night. We also recap the NPLW…
We might go through these in chronological order, Adam.
So we'll go with the women's final.
And as much as things change, they do stay the same here.
Knights continuing their stranglehold over United in the Derby.
A goal just before the halftime break from Paloma Oliveira, then an own goal midway through the second half, making it a 2-0 win for the Knights as they pick up a second trophy within the last week.
They do, and again, I think they'll get more satisfaction with these two trophies this season.
You never say you're not satisfied, but the adversity that this Gold Coast Knights side has had to face with the absolute fixture congestion that they had to deal with, pretty much being inactive for weeks because of the rain and the stay of the pitch down at home.
For them to come back and somehow come out the other side with two trophies I think is a marvellous effort for Glynn Boyd and that very, very talented squad.
The core of that team is still that 2024 team that won five trophies in the season.
They won the premiership last season and they defended their premiership last weekend and also adds a second Queensland Cup to that collection.
They do add a second Queensland Cup to that collection, an ever-growing collection of trophies down there for the Gold Coast.
Nice trophy number nine, bringing them level with Brisbane City trailing just the line just seen now in the all-time trophy list for the football Queensland competitions in the NPL era.
But that goal right before halftime was really crucial, wasn't it? It was a pretty even game up until that point, but that goal just did give Knights the ascendancy going into the break, and they were able to control the game out in the second half pretty well from there.
I think as the first half went on, and you're right, it was a very, very tight game.
Neither team was getting much control through the middle.
Where the attacks were coming, were coming from the wide areas.
And that's no shock.
The players for both teams on either side were...
We're sort of making sort of ground.
I think Paloma Oliveira, who ended up scoring the opening goal, she had been in a very, very good vein of form.
She's had to sort of bide her time in that attacking line.
but has scored a number of key goals in the last few weeks, and it's almost been that she got the opening goal.
Again, Harriet Withers and Bronte Rose as well, bombing down that side, as well as causing nightmares for the Gold Coast United fullbacks.
