We haven't had you on for any of the World Cup stuff, so, um, I don't know if you wanted to give us a general overview of your impressions of the tournament so far before we go into the nitty-gritty of what we have in common.
Yeah, no, I, I, I have to, I have to say, I, I started off sort of slightly disengaged, semi-disengaged let's say from, from it.
Um, partly for kind of, you know, context reasons that have been well aired elsewhere, you know, the, the [laughs] the fan gouging, um, the Trump-FIFA relationship, all the other stuff that's gone on the, on the periphery.
And the fact that it's now a much bigger tournament.
So I, I didn't fully engage with a lot of the group games, apart from England's, uh, and Scotland's, um, I have to admit, um, until now.
But yeah, as you say, y- the, the excitement builds, right? And the prospect of a semifinal against Argentina on Wednesday, you can't, you can't not be excited about that, um, given all the, the, the history and the, the context and w- and the possibility of being in a World Cup final, um, which I didn't think would happen in my lifetime.
It may still not, but who knows? Um, so, so yeah.
I mean, th- you know, there've been a lot...
I'm sure we'll get into the detail.
There've been, there've been some good stories, there's been plenty of controversy, as there always is.
Um, but, uh, and I, you know, I think...
I won't say we flew by the seat of our pants against Norway, but I think there was, there was... we were a little bit fortunate to, to come through that.
But, you know, this probably won't be the last cliche of the night, but at this stage of the tournament it's just about winning, it's not about how you do it.
But I do think, yeah, it's maybe been good for England to have run a little bit close in these games.
To have been run close by Mexico, um, in a game in which I don't think we were in any way outright favorites at all.
So we've, we've went up against it, and we've had to battle, and maybe this has helped us in to the longer term.
Um, it was pretty hot for the game against Norway, but we'd had a longer break, um, to recover from the altitude and the Mexico game, um, which we needed, which was good.
It's realigned us more timing-wise with the other teams, isn't it? We had the disadvantage of being the last group of a very swollen tournament to get underway.
