**Leaving home waters behind for ocean passages, Caribbean anchorages and the unexpected.** What happens when years of sailing the Solent turn into something much bigger? In this episode, Alan…
Alan, you tried to tell me that they were still good for a few years, but as we joked, I did get the blue screen of death as I bought a Prover Needles, and that was the excuse I needed to upgrade to the latest Raymarine multifunctional displays.
Would you say power is probably, it seems to me, almost the single biggest issue.
It's certainly one of the most discussed issues in terms of long-term cruising and blue water cruising.
And, I mean, one of the things I didn't want to do was make our Kylo look like a Christmas tree at the back.
I've never gone overboard on what it is but I wanted a layered system so wind power, solar power and later on I put on a Remoran hydro generator as well with the idea that with all of those interacting and running together I could pretty much cover the 350 amp hours that I reckoned I would need daily for an Atlantic crossing.
And in the end we decided, you know, actually we don't need the freezer because you can use tinned dried goods for your proteins just as easily.
And that actually, not using the freezer, gave a lot more scope to the other systems.
So I think, yes, although I'm not a miser on electricity, but I don't waste it.
