Week 3, Day 1.
When most of us think of prayer, asking God for stuff is usually what we have in mind.
When we say, I'll pray for you, what we are saying is that we will come before the Lord and ask Him for favor and blessing on that person's behalf.
The story we will read today is an amazing example of someone asking and God answering in a big way.
Although he may not always answer our requests quite so quickly or directly, today we'd like to take a moment to learn a little bit more about how we can present our requests to God.
There are two distinct ways of asking God for things.
There is asking for ourselves, petition, and asking on behalf of another person, intercession.
God wants us to ask him for the things we both need and desire.
And not only does he tell us to ask, but he also promises to give us what we ask for.
Don't remember this? He says it three times in Matthew, once in Mark, twice in Luke, and four times in John.
Now, clearly, there is a nuance to what he says.
We need to ask in his name and according to his will, but the bottom line is that God wants us to ask for the things we need or desire, and he also wants to give us those things.
The key to petition and intercession that John most directly points out is asking in his name.
This is a great way to end a prayer, but really, we've got it out of order.
The only reason we can approach God seated high on his throne, as beloved sons and daughters, is because of Jesus.
This is exactly the way Peter approaches his healing of the lame man in today's reading, in Jesus' name.
Jesus is the only reason we even get to talk to God like this in the first place.
And as we stand before the Father in Jesus' name, we recognize that we are disciples who are being transformed into his likeness.
To put it another way, every time before we bring the request to God, we think, how would Jesus be praying about this request if he were me? God, through his Holy Spirit, is at work in the world.
