Today, I'm joined by Mia Luce, a ceremonial guide and drum doula who helps people birth their own sacred drums through a process rooted in ceremony, reverence for the earth, and deep respect for the spirits of the animals and materials involved.

I actually had the opportunity to birth my own drum earlier this year with Mia, and in our conversation, we go much deeper into the meaning and medicine behind that process.

Mia shares why she sees the drum as a bridge between spirit and the physical world, how its heartbeat can bring us back into the present moment and into connection with the earth, and why birthing a drum is about so much more than simply making an instrument.

We also talk about the many layers of intention that go into Mia's work, from ethically sourcing and preparing each hide and asking permission from the spirit of the animal to the sacred geometry woven into the lacing and the seven-day gestation and awakening process for each drum.

Mia also shares some of the spiritual guidance she

has received through the original mother of drums and how that guidance continues to shape and evolve her work today.

A little more about Mia.

She grew up on a farm in northern Sweden, surrounded by forests and deeply connected to the land from an early age.

After moving to New York City at 19 and eventually working for the Swedish mission to the UN, her life changed drastically when she became seriously ill with Lyme's disease.

That period led Mia into years of healing and spiritual exploration, including a shamanic apprenticeship, plant medicine ceremonies, and teaching with the Ojibwe elders where she first began learning how to make her own drum.

What began as part of her own healing journey eventually became a calling to help others birth drums of their own.

Today, Mia draws from her Taino and Swedish ancestry, Ojibwe teachings, Earth-based traditions, and her own intuitive connection with the unseen to guide workshops, ceremonies, and drum-birthing rituals around the country.
