Schubert D960 Scherzo Walkthrough

The scherzo has really two parts.

There's an allegro.

The indication is vivaciously, but with delicacy.

And then there's a trio section, which is a lot darker, and the registers are much lower, the writing is much lower.

So it requires different thinking, different kinds of bringing out of the sound, essentially.

Now, the allegro vivace con delicatezza, that's the indication for the beginning.

Oftentimes I've talked about the tempo indication of an Allegretto piece.

Allegretto is not quite Allegro, maybe a little less, depending on, you know, who you ask.

But essentially, I've always found there's always a lightness to the work in question, whether the work be by Chopin, by Beethoven, Schubert, as we're looking at here.

Of course, this is indicated Allegro, but you can apply an Allegretto mindset, I would say.

Now, to begin, we're not going to start with the beginning of the work.

We're actually going to start with the trio proper.

The trio, once you get to it, there's an indication after a couple of repeats, it says to go back to the beginning and then you end at the coda.

So it's a little bit of an abbreviated notation that was used.

Otherwise, we'd have to spend four pages and a lot of duplication of notes.

So obviously printing then is now was, you know, expensive or, you know, it costs money rather.

So this was a way to have a shorthand notation, save paper and plates back then.

But let's start off with the trio.
