Ross Holmes Part 1

I had a friend say that we play our personality.

And the first time I heard that, I felt like, that's interesting.

And then I thought, oh, no, because I could see when I didn't want to do that kind of thing.

You're like, I'm

too good.

Yeah.

That was not my thought at all, Ross.

You're like,

very good at winning.

In a world, I realize.

In

a world.

It made me realize all of the tendencies that I have when I play that are related to what I normally do.

And so it sounds like with improv, you've kind of done something different throughout, like you were talking about when you were with Hornsby and a different method of soloing.

So do you see your personality in your playing, do you see that as also kind of like changing as you get more experience kind of thing? Yeah.

Certainly.

So since 2018, I've been a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

And the way that I improvised with Bruce Hornsby was, let's call it spacey.

Okay.

Because of the history of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Vassar Clements and John McEwen and the fiddle players on the Circle Records, Stuart Duncan and Mark O'Connor and name them.

Yeah.

To play the songs in this band, I certainly play them the way I play them.

But there still has to be an acknowledgement of what was done before.

And so I find that improvising certainly has changed and developed.

And because a lot of my time is spent playing more of that... country, grassy, kind of just lay into your fiddle a bit more with the dirt band.
