The first thing the Shaykh mentions is the reciters attending gatherings of condolences.

The Shaykh says here, this is a newly invented innovation that has nothing to do with the religion.

This idea of gathering to read Qur'an for the deceased, there is no basis for it in the religion.

Believing that it is a legislated act of worship, is surely an affair which Allah has sent no authority for.

Allah says, أَلَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءً شَرَعُوا لَهُمْ مِنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَنْ بِهِ اللَّهِ Or have they partners with Allah, false gods, who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed.

So for someone to believe that this is something that is legislated in Islam, without any evidence, without any authority from Allah, then this is something very dangerous.

So as I said, no one can claim that there is a basis for reading Qur'an or having gatherings of reading Qur'an for the deceased.

Yes, it wasn't from the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, but they based it on some hadith which many of the scholars deemed weak.

Here it said, first of all, many of the scholars speculated whether the hadith was authentic or not.

So if it's not authentic, it shouldn't be something that is the basis of practice.

How do we implement it? How do we read Yasin over the deceased? Some scholars, they said, meaning the one who is about to die, the one who is still alive and aware, read Surah Yasin, over him as this person is approaching death.
