The first time I was introduced to this term, I think it was in 2013, I was in a conference on acoustics and it was part of a workshop where they were placing people in a room and they were simulating the way another room would have sounded like, which is something I was always interested in.

So, in a nutshell, it's being able to simulate the properties of a certain sound field.

You can create a grid of loudspeakers and then you can reproduce that provided you have recorded also in a certain way.

You can have a binaural rendering of a certain sonic environment you record and you can also record it in a binaural fashion or you can record it in other ways so every time we are creating a virtual version of a specific sonic experience that is supposed to happen usually in the real world then we are talking about virtual acoustics of course nowadays you can overlay a lot of different sonic realities.

So I like that the term is you can apply it to too many different projects in a sense, but after all is still the capability to simulate a specific sound field.
