In this episode, I'm speaking to Dr. Alessia Milo, who is a Senior Computational Design and Virtual Acoustics Specialist at Treble Technologies.

Alessia has a really interesting and interdisciplinary background.

She was originally trained as an architect before specialising in acoustics, virtual reality and sound perception, and she went to complete a PhD in soundscape perception.

Yeah, I definitely think what you're in is very key for actual music itself and people often forget actually like that thing exists, that everything is designed for a reason and that way for a reason.

And to sort of help destruct that, what's like a real world example of something that you've worked on that people might have walked through or heard without realising?

It's interesting because right now where I'm working at Treble Technologies we develop acoustic simulation software so thanks to our long list of customers we have a lot of designs that we are not even aware of that are actually being built so our software is used to inform design decisions from early on and especially it is used by acousticians so acousticians can create simulations and share them with architects through realizations that where you can kind of move your head in real time and look at different points and you move through a series of receivers in the room So there are some recording studios and concert halls and even schools, restaurants that are being designed thanks to our contribution.

If we go one step back, my first job as an architect was with a with a company called Arkea Sociati and I always think that it was so funny that they designed some noise barriers on the motorway and even if I wasn't working with them for that specific design I always thought that was so interesting that just some pieces of wood or some other material on the motorway can actually make it a better experience and there are so many other examples of designs that we don't even think about.
