Morning stacks, gadgets, pendants and the next “must-have” protocol. Is any of it really functional medicine? In this episode of *What Is Health*, Oliver Barnett is joined by two experienced…
think part of the reason I've got you guys both on the podcast, love and respect both of you.
I think part of the theme for today's podcast is where is functional medicine? Where are we at today? And where has it gone? And I spoke to you about it, Steve, and I'm quite disillusioned with what is being marketed now as functional.
functional medicine and you've got all these you know like influencers and people talking about their morning stack and all this type of stuff and it's been quite frustrating we're seasoned professionals in this industry and i'm finding it you know go on social media and there's like every everything that comes up my feed is some new product some new device that's aimed at changing your life or what have you i wondered if you can speak to that at all steve
I think like when you kind of, the thing that sort of attracted me more to functional medicine was, you know, ultimately I felt like I was thinking in that kind of like process model to start off with.
I was kind of looking at, you know, thinking about, you know, sleep and stress and movement and exercise and nutrition and trying to have kind of like more of a holistic view on how I was going to work with clients, functional medicine offered me a kind of way of going, okay, well, actually I kind of fit a bit more into this box where I can use this sort of like holistic model layering other things like being able to do lab testing with clients and maybe bridge the gap between what I do and maybe be able to work alongside other kind of clinicians and practitioners and doctors and that sort of thing so I think what we see out there I don't think is really functional medicine I think the challenge for me at the moment is that what i see a lot of people who are calling themselves functional medicine practitioners and even the functional medicine kind of education providers i don't think are delivering what originally was functional medicine and that that's kind of like that's the thing that i sort of like for me i i feel i see in the industry at the moment that there's a kind of you know Ultimately with functional medicine, it's not really a qualification of itself.
And I think, you know, you'll have nutritionists that do that, doctors that would do that, osteopaths that would do that.
But in reality, what you kind of get is a watered down version of sort of functional medicine, potentially based upon who is delivering that as well.
no, you're right, right? Here's the latest gadget or the latest pill or whatever it is.
It's going to change your life and, you know, wear this pendant around your neck and you're going to feel peaceful.
But people are looking for the pill for the ill, right? They're looking for the way that like, oh, that's the thing I need.
