And w- th- the point is the soil of our hearts really matters.
It really matters.
Because as Jesus is, is speaking, and we're just about to read one of his parables, as Jesus is speaking, he's speaking to a group of people who are expecting the Kingdom of God to come with shock and awe, right? They're expecting a m- a, a military takeover.
They're expecting power and might and, and this kind of invasion of the Kingdom of God to come that's, that, that's gonna be obvious from the outside.
But what Jesus is telling us over and over again is that the kingdom doesn't come like that in this age.
The way that the kingdom comes is a tiny seed is sown into hearts, and it grows, not...
It doesn't come from the outside in.
It grows from the inside out into our lives and out into our community.
And so therefore, what we're about to discover is that the soil of our hearts, like how we receive the kingdom, it really matters.
And so, um, we're gonna read from Matthew chapter 13, reading from verse one.
Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat on, sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore.
Then he told them many things in parables, saying: A farmer went out to sow his seed.
As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
Some fell on rocky places, where it didn't have much soil.
It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.
But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.
Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.
Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop – a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
Whoever has ears, let them hear.
The disciples came to him and they asked him, "Why do you speak to people in parables?" He replied, "Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them." And then for the sake of time we're just gonna skip forward to verse 18.
It says: Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and doesn't understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart.
This is the seed sown along the path.
The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
But since they have no root, they last only a short time.
