UFC Shanghai delivered huge upsets, statement finishes, and some major changes to multiple title pictures! Song Yadong pulled off the biggest win of his career in the main event, knocking out Umar…
Song Yedong may just be next up.
And let me tell you right now, none of those other 12 victories have been nearly as impressive or as monumental from a career trajectory perspective than this one right here, the marquee bout, the headlining spot, face on the poster, number one contender shot potentially on the line, and Song Yedong delivered when it mattered most.
And he now improves to 2-0 on the year in China itself because we can't forget that back in May he headlined again and that time he stopped a former champion, Davison Figueiredo.
And so after an 0-1 start to the year where he lost a former champion, Sean O'Malley, he has righted the ship more so than ever in his career and he finds himself in the driver's seat calling next for the Peter Jan Marabdawolishvili trilogy winner coming up at the end of October.
For the 6 minutes and 48 seconds of action that we got to see in this main event, it was high-level mixed martial arts, and I didn't expect anything other than that.
Umar Nurmagomedov is one of the most talented bantamweights on the entire roster.
Song Yudong continues to improve fight by fight as he climbs into his prime.
And so in that first round, we saw 17 strikes landed for Umar, 18 strikes landed for Song.
We saw Umar land a takedown with 1 minute and 58 seconds of control time, a little bit of everything in that opening period.
But then in round two, it was Song Yedong that was evolving his game plan and strategizing more toward his opponent Umar than vice versa as he would halt both takedown attempts from Umar.
And on the second entry, that is when he would land the uppercut herd round the world that would send Umar face first down to the canvas out cold in the Chinese home crowd in that arena.
And this was the first knockout victory for Song Yedong since April of 2023 when he finished Ricky Simone via punches, and that came in the fifth and final round of their main event bout.
But here against Umar, who is a much more highly accredited mixed martial artist than Ricky, and that's saying a lot coming from me because I'm more Ricky on verbal sparring, he only needed a little bit north of six minutes.
Not to mention when you have guys such as Islam Makachev, Habib Nurmagomedov, and brother of Umar Usman in the corner.
It's always an uphill battle when you're going against someone from that Team Habib camp.
And Song Yedong absolutely cashed as a massive betting underdog.
And he called his shot in that post-fight interview.
He had the crowd all up in a tizzy.
And he wants next.
And I think that he might just get it.
But there's a couple of asterisks that we have to discuss.
