I love the example of a little kid that sees a... a glowing hot burner and touches it and their whole world changes because they've discovered this hot burner and what happens when you touch it.

And the one thing your mind does immediately is it creates a rule around that event.

You don't feel bad that you typically, I don't imagine too many people felt guilty for touching it or stupid for touching it.

The difference with something that involves an adult or some type of authority figure or a group of whose acceptance we want is that when something difficult happens in relationship to them and we perceive that as some kind of attack on who we are, we don't really have the ability to step outside of that moment and look at it in the way that we might look at it now as an adult.

And so we make a determination about ourselves that we're not good enough or we're powerless or whatever.

And then the mind, this is one of the most interesting parts of this, is the mind, just like with the burner, starts to create rules around how to avoid contact with that particular wound.

We never go back to check this because why would we? We don't even know we've done it.

And when we first bump into these beliefs, it's a huge relief, right? my gosh, this is what's doing it.
