Gareth Wynne Williams was born on the 26th of September 1978 in Valley, Anglesey in North Wales.

He was a mathematics prodigy, completing a first class degree at Bangor University in Wales at the age of 17.

He worked as a codebreaker with a focus on Russian organised crime and money laundering.

He preferred solitude to company and spent his free time on his bike, taking long, solitary cycling routes.

In 2009, Williams began a secondment from GCHQ in Cheltenham to MI6 in London, working on cybersecurity and hacking-related intelligence.

His sister, Kerry Subby, said that he disliked MI6's office culture, the competitive displays of wealth among colleagues, the flashy cars, the obligatory drinks after work.

He was due to finish his secondment and return to Cheltenham on the 3rd of September 2010.

Williams was last confirmed alive on CCTV footage around the 14th or 15th of August 2010.

In the early hours of the 16th of August, his laptop logged an interaction with a cycling website.

It compromised forensic evidence through decomposition and it caused avoidable distress to his family.

When the welfare check finally happened on the 23rd of August, it produced the scene officers found in the bathroom on Aldernae Street.

Investigators now had to work out how a man had ended up locked inside a bag he could not have locked from the inside, in a bathroom staged with the lights off and the heating on in high summer.
