Trade Life by Point Load Media

This week Mike Holmes Jr. and Ian sit down with Evan of Evan's Workshop - a young tradesman who skipped the "figure it out later" route and went straight into the trades. We get into what it actually…
So I wanna really focus for a second and unpack your experiences at school and your exposure to woodworking.
Yeah.
The reason why is our biggest initiative with Point Load Media and then with Project Network is around trades advocacy.
Mm-hmm.
So I, I'm really interested to hear, you are, you are the next generation, right? I know what my experience was.
A, a lot of the times when we're approaching these things, we're looking at it, and we're talking to other people around like our generation, our age, and it's all kind of in hindsight.
And what we experienced, we're like, "Oh, we wish it was different," all that kind of stuff.
Mm-hmm.
But I'd love to hear from your perspective, what is it actually like right now? How are trades viewed amongst your peer group, amongst the school? What kind of exposure did you get in school? I'd love to kind of like unpack that.
And this is actually the perfect question because you have somebody who's like actually, you know, growing up in this generation.
You have, I have first-hand experiences on what kids wanna do-
... and what, you know, teachers and school and what everybody's telling them.
So one of the things that I love and I really try and preach for on my Instagram is, you know, getting the next generation of kids and makers into the trades because at the end of the day, like it's a dying art.
You know, there's not a lot of people that wanna do it, but it sucks because it's such a satisfying, fulfilling, rewarding job.
And, you know, the unfortunate thing with school is, you know, every- everybody, it's all about grades, getting in the top schools.
You know, you know, "If you don't go to school, you're gonna be nothing," like all sorts of like this stuff, and I think a lot of kids get caught up with that.
And, you know, like I just graduated high school, and at the graduation, like everybody walks the stage and they say, "Okay, this person's going to this school studying this." I honestly don't think that there was one person that said, "I'm..." Uh, like when they were walking the stage saying, "I am going to trade school," or, "I am doing-"
"... something with my hands." It's everybody's going, "School, school, school, school." Um, so there's, it, it's kind of unfortunate.
