SawStop

Yeah.

Uh, as somebody that was at IWF a couple weeks ago and talked to the Festool and SawStop CEO, uh, same person, um, I can, I'll f- I'll field this one.

Um, there are some positions at Shaper that are being absorbed by Festool, um, and then some of them are, um, dissolving as of the new year.

[lips smack] Um, you know, obviously Festool has a marketing team, they don't need two marketing teams, et cetera, et cetera.

So a lot of the engineering and R&D people that were on the Shaper side that are intimately attached to that system and the technology, those are going into Festool.

Um, some of the other, um- Customer service and marketing type people, those, those people, um, I think are, um, going to be pursuing careers elsewhere.

Um, and as far as the, uh, the SawStop thing goes, I think that it was a twofold reason why they went to a bandsaw first.

Um, first, I think it's the easiest of the tools to stop.

When spending more actually gets you something better.

And when you're just paying for a name from Festool to SawStop to Milwaukee to Harbor Freight and everything in between, where do you draw the line? So grab a drink, jump in the chat, and tell us what's the most expensive tool you've ever bought uh was that worth every penny that you thought it was going to be and uh let's get going so who wants to uh start outside of the fact that uh yeah i think everything is too expensive right now thank you for coming to my ted talk

yeah i agree i agree um I'll start it off.

And this is kind of something that I've been wanting to do for a long time.

So what about what y'all's opinion on our tools getting too damn expensive?

Yeah, so I think one of the things we have to ask ourself is how have the tools that we've been buying changed over time? And I think that majority of these tools have kind of been pretty stagnant for the last 30 years.

And really in the last five to 10 years, we've seen some advancements in the technologies In these tools, I mean, first and foremost, SawStop.

They're sensing technology that they put into their blades to stop that blade in fractions of a second if it comes in contact

Yeah.

So one great example of that is SawStop, which is a table saw safety device created by a guy named Steve Gass, who was an amateur woodworker, and by day, a patent attorney, which-

[laughs] Nice

...

This thing just gets in my way.

Yeah.

He created a thing called SawStop, where he ran an electric circuit through the blade with a microprocessor, and he put what looks like, um- Essentially an aluminum brake below the blade.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah.

Didn't they just come out with their version of SawStop? I

saw that.

Like their dream table or something like that? Yeah.

No one's buying this with the intention of being an asshole when they're using the bandsaw.

You're buying it as an insurance policy.

Likewise with the SawStop.

Yeah.

you know, the facade is going to look like on that.

Um, but, uh, it was, it was cool talking to the guys at Shaper and, um, the Festool CEO who happens to also be the SawStop CEO.

Um, so we talked to him about both the bandsaw and, um, the kind of merger of those two.

And he said, look, he's like, the thing is like what they hope that this means for their customers is that there's going to be more horsepower put behind Origin and kind of the tech development and stuff like that.

Hey, guess what? Somebody made a SawStop killer, right? We're going to find out.

But it is a finger-saving technology that's coming out pretty soon.

Um, but there were two things that, that came out of the show that I saw referenced and saw some quick videos I thought we might mention.

Um, one is the SawStop band saw.

Did you guys see that?

I did.

Uh-huh.

So, I mean, from what I've seen, it is classic SawStop in that it's a destructive process.

There's a big giant, looks like a big, giant gray cartridge that severs-
