What does it look like to surrender everything to Jesus and discover that He is worth more than anything we could ever gain? In this special 75th anniversary episode of **The** **Smarter Generosity…
Yes, and this is one of the things that we're celebrating in this 75th anniversary.
You see, Katie, in the beginning, Bill was trying to fund this entire ministry through his business ventures.
He thought, okay, if I can grow and expand Bright's California Confections and run a successful company, well, I'll use the profits to bankroll the mission.
But things began to grow so fast as the staff numbers grew, the number of employees at Crew.
He saw that relying on a private business enterprise to fund a global vision to fulfill the Great Commission and this movement that was rapidly expanding, it just wasn't going to work.
And that was that if every single staff member could surrender their pursuit of a traditional corporate career and raise their own financial support, by pursuing and building a community of ministry partners that they would invite to support them personally in the mission.
It was unheard of in the 1950s for an interdenominational movement to do that.
But the neat thing is that Bill and Vannette weren't asking their staff to do anything that they weren't doing themselves.
And so they chose for the rest of their lives until they died, they lived on the exact same missionary support scale as a fresh staff member would right out of college.
And it was their personal spirit of surrender, I believe, that laid the groundwork for tens of thousands of crew staff around the world to do the same thing over the last 75 years.
Men and women who've turned down corporate law tracks, tech startups, medical careers, executive promotions.
and they have chosen to live day by day in joyful dependence on God's provision.
So that support raising model changed world missions, and now it's pretty much the standard used by mission agencies today.
I feel like that level of radical generosity just adds such beauty to the Brights legacy.
I mean, every time a young crew staff member steps into a university campus or moves overseas, just trusting God.
