Alois worked as a professor at the University of Madenberg in Germany and was well-liked and respected among his colleagues.

On August 1, 2013, he headed out to the San Bernardino Mountains in California with a hiking group.

The plan was for the group to hike the Pinnacle Trail in the Lake Arrowhead area.

However, at around 5.45 p.m., Alois became separated from the group.

He was also proficient in hunting, but without the right equipment, the group knew he would not survive for long.

When his absence was noted, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office was notified and began their extensive search for Alois.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office, search and rescue groups, and volunteers scoured the San Bernardino Mountains for Alois, but ultimately no sign of him was ever found.

Since October 2013, Alois Case has sat cold and his family and friends in Germany are desperate for answers.

All right, so we had the possibility of flooding along the coast, but we also had mudslides in the mountains, and some were pretty severe.

They had a hell of a lot of rain up in the San Bernardino Mountains, and a lot of that came down in mud, and this is just the beginning.

This is not even El Nino.

We don't get to El Nino until October 15th.

We're still three weeks away, and they're already dealing with floods up in the San Bernardino Mountains.

It's horrible.

We're talking about a cleanup after a late monsoon season storm came out of nowhere.

That's right.

Tracking El Nino.

We have new video this morning of mudslides triggered by a monsoon that hit the Big Bear side of the San Bernardino Mountains.

Fears are now that we could see more of this type of lightning hail and rain as El Nino gets stronger this winter.

Eyewitness News reporter Madison Wild is live in Yucaiba getting a closer look at some of the damage.

With this predicted El Nino that's coming, that increases our chance for heavy rainfall.

So we'd like people to know if they do live in a burn scar area, the potential for risk of flood, mud and debris flows.

Also up in Big Bear, this monsoonal moisture bringing heavy lightning, hail and rain as these thunderstorms developed around the San Bernardino Mountains before making their way from the north, way in from the north and high deserts.

We saw flash flooding impacting Highway 18 through Big Bear along with that hail that we've been talking about.
