Building Your ATC Tool Belt: One Tool at a time

And so what we're going to do is we're going to start talking about the air traffic controller tool belt.

And, you know, I had people tell me this, use this phrase, tool belt, all throughout my career, various times.

And it wasn't just in training.

But it was in reference to learning something new and being able to apply something that was new to you.

And so it got me thinking about the fact that it doesn't matter where you are in your air traffic controller career.

You have a tool belt, OK? And before I get too deep into it, I do want to start with this quote.

And it kind of summarizes some ideas from Aristotle.

It says, we are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence, then, is not an act.

It's a habit.

And so that plays into developing this tool belt because you don't just see something new or hear something new or read something new and then apply it.

It doesn't work that way.

And so, you know, It's something that you have to develop.

It's something that you have to work on.

It's something that you have to continue to try.

And every controller, every controller, and especially every great controller, started with an empty tool belt.

They didn't start with all the tools already in their tool belt and already knowing how to take care of everything.

It didn't happen that way.

It doesn't happen that way for any of us.

I mean, no one begins their ATC career, wherever it is, with perfect phraseology or with a whole lot of confidence.

and definitely don't have any experience.

And because of that, you don't really have any controller judgment.

You develop that as you go through.

So every single controller working live traffic today started with an empty tool belt.

The difference is what happens next.
