Hypatia of Alexandria was called the philosopher.

She was the daughter of the Alexandrian mathematician Theon.

She was also his student and assistant, but eventually became one of the best known intellectuals in Alexandria.

The evidence, however, is pretty uneven.

We don't have any of her books.

We don't know exactly when she was born.

We don't know anything about her.

mother, but we have the work of her students, some of their manuscripts and their letters, and we have a few literary accounts, outlines really, of her career.

On today's episode, we're going to think about how Hypatia came to be.

How did she acquire her authority in a society where Advanced education was rare for anybody, and becoming a professional philosopher was almost entirely a male pursuit.

And of course, it's all the more interesting that she did this in the midst of the Christianization of the Roman Empire.
