China's slowdown: what's next for NZ business

So what does this all mean for Kiwis trying to crack the Chinese market? You're listening to a social media ad in China from Kiwi company Two Islands that makes nutritional products for women.

Yeah, so Two Islands is a wellness brand.

We are female focused.

We've been around for eight years now, so I have a background in nutrition, which is how the brand came about.

Founder Julia Matthews was at the China Business Summit talking about why she's targeted the country.

We launched into China eight months ago.

Eight months ago?

Yes, so very fresh in the market.

Okay.

Why did you want to go to China?

China, for me, was always on my radar.

We have a really great partnership with NZTE and I've been to many of their seminars and workshops about export.

And for me, China seemed like the most exciting market.

Obviously, it's absolutely huge.

But to me, it was kind of, it felt like a bit of a challenge.

Is

it not enough of a challenge just to launch a business and keep it going and expand

it? Yes.

Without

taking on the biggest market? No.

Yes, absolutely.

I think I just heard incredible stories.

I'd also heard not so great ones of other New Zealand businesses being in China and the success that they'd had.

And I kind of always thought, oh, I'd love to have a piece of that.

And knowing, obviously, how big the market is and the potential that that could have on the business.
