"Lord, Save Me" — Caroline Devitt

There is a British television show that I love called The Great British Bake Off, or as it's called on Netflix here in the U.S., The Great British Baking Show.

If you've never seen it, the premise is very simple.

A group of amateur bakers are put in a giant tent in the English countryside and are asked to bake increasingly elaborate things while two very accomplished judges walk around evaluating them.

And somehow this is riveting television.

There are no million-dollar prizes.

This isn't Survivor.

There's no alliances or people getting voted off the island.

The winner gets a cake stand.

And yet, the emotional stakes are enormous.

The most intimidating person in all of this is one of the judges, whose name is Paul Hollywood, who has these extremely blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make a grown adult feel like a child getting scolded for undercooking a loaf of bread.
