The episode opens up with Mary and Murray in the newsroom, and Ted walks in and wants to see Lou right away.
Mary tells Ted that Lou is not in, and just as Ted goes into his office to wait for him, Lou comes out and is upset that Mary lied.
But Lou essentially im- implies that he-- she-- he told her to lie, and Ted now is complaining about a parking spot, and apparently it's Lou that parked in Ted's space.
So now Lou's okay with it and starts to tell him to ignore a note that he left and then Ted says, "Never mind, I'll take the note off myself." Lou and Ted leave.
Rhoda walks in and is in a hurry to get out to lunch with Mary.
And Ma-- Rhoda's in a hurry because her mother is visiting, and she needs to go rent a b-bed.
Mary thinks that's nice.
Rhoda says, "It's nice when your mother visits, not when my mother visits." But Mary says, "I like her.
She's a nice person." And Rhoda says, "I like her too, but I like her better not in person than in person." And in our next scene, we are in Rhoda's apartment.
We don't get up there too often, but we obviously will for this episode.
And Rhoda and Mary are making up the bed, making up the apartment for Rhoda's mother.
We hear a knock on the door, and right away Rhoda knows it's her mother.
She opens the door, and in she comes, still carrying that huge suitcase that she had the last time we saw her.
She kisses Rhoda.
She kisses Mary.
Rhoda takes her suitcase and struggles to pick it up again, which is still a fun gag, while this little old lady, who's not really that little or that old, picks it up without any problem whatsoever.
Mary starts to leave to give them time to catch up, but her mother-- Rhoda's mother tells Mary to stay and then goes over to Rhoda and says she looks terrific.
Rhoda tells her mother that she's really happy she's here, and her mother says, "I am too, and I'm leaving." And Rhoda says, "What do you mean you're leaving?" And her mother says, "I'm going to a hotel." And Rhoda says, "No, I rented this bed for you and everything, and I emptied drawers for you." Rhoda sees that this is just a cot.
Um, sorry, her mother sees it's just a cot, but goes about it, and then Rhoda's mother compliments how slim Mary is, and then when she turns back to Rhoda, Rhoda has bent down and has her backside to her mother as Rhoda is unpacking her suitcase.
The audience laughs at her mother just looking at Rhoda's backside, and then Mary and Rhoda...
I'm sorry, Mary and Rhoda's mother sit down on Rhoda's bed to start talking, and she-- her mother is just talking about a great time she had by herself in the Poconos.
And Mary says, "Sometimes the best vacations are the ones you have by yourself." And to a certain extent, I do agree with that.
I have gone on quite a many vacations by myself, and usually left to my own devices with nobody to deal with is better and more enjoyable than having to deal with and worry about other people.
So now we learn that the reason for Rhoda's mother visiting is because she found a great guy for Rhoda.
