Sperm DNA Fragmentation: What You Need to Know | Lalana Songra What is sperm DNA fragmentation, why does it matter for male fertility, and what can a DNA fragmentation test actually tell you? In…
So very long name, but effectively what it is is the building blocks for life.
It provides the kind of genetic code and the instructions for building the human body.
And the code is then used to make the proteins and all the rest of the kind of molecules that we need for life.
And you mentioned it's in every cell, of course, sperm being a cell and the smallest.
Yeah.
So and that's hence why we're having the conversation here today, because we're all about fertility.
And like Kieran said, it's a topic that comes up constantly and it is.
It's becoming more and more talked about, and then with more and more discussion, often comes a little bit of confusion, misinformation, or confusion at best, misinformation at worst, perhaps.
So that's why we want to cut through it today, really, and get back to the basics, and hence, what is that DNA? But then moving on from that, how does that impact sperm, and what is its role to play with sperm?
And when you have DNA, you have it's almost it's described as a double helix structure.
And what that actually means is it almost looks like a ladder that has kind of two sides and then rungs in the middle and then that's twisted.
And so we kind of talk about bases in the backbone and the backbone is like that ladder structure.
And so that's one of the unique features about how kind of the DNA is stored within sperm is that it's much more tightly compacted and compressed than it would be in the other cells.
