In this episode, Pastor Joie sits down with Dr. Robyn Graham for an honest conversation about anxiety, ambition, and the pressure that often comes with being a high achiever. Together, they unpack why…
And the title is, you know, when high achieving crosses the line and it's not healthy anymore.
And I feel like that line is when it crosses into anxiety and everything that anxiety produces.
And, you know, that word anxiety, I feel like it's either overused in the world today or it's in especially in the Christian realm.
It can also almost be like a faux pas, like if you're a Christian, you're not supposed to be anxious.
And so let's talk about that because I feel like we can be walking around and carrying anxiety and not realize it.
And it even kind of seeps out of our lives in different expressions that if we don't recognize it, we can't deal with it and have the strategies and understand even what scripture says to call it out for what it is.
I love that you do trauma therapy as well, because that's how it is with trauma, where like, maybe nothing major, like I wasn't in a fire, or I wasn't didn't have a traumatic, as the world would define it, or entertainment experience, yet, a lot of us are carrying trauma as well.
So So with anxiety, though, what would you say to the woman who is just feeling like overwhelmed, it's feeling unhealthy, and, and maybe is experiencing some anxiety, we can't really define it.
Okay, so I have to go back to one of the first things you said and how we see so much of it now, and it's almost overused, the phrase anxiety.
And here's the problem with that, because a lot of people, now that people are more open about mental health challenges, a lot of people are grasping onto that as an excuse.
They may or may not have a clinical diagnosis of anxiety, but they've heard the phrase, I can't do that because I have anxiety.
So for example, maybe they're overreacting quite frequently and their behavior choices are quite poor and they're hurting other people.
And our nervous system was created so miraculously that God put innately in us a mechanism to keep ourselves safe.
But as society grew and we have more tools and resources to keep ourselves safe on a daily basis, we don't have to be on such high alert.
So yes, scripture tells us do not be anxious, but we are also humans and we also have a sinful nature to fall back on our own resources.
