Buried Under the Rubble: Moving from Discipline to Passion

So first off, how about a working definition? I've got definition of passion as an intense devotion to a person, place, thing, or idea.

So it's a devotion.

It's something that's consuming.

It's something heart, mind, and body all work together to accomplish a certain goal.

More and more, I'm thinking about passion as a gift.

It's something you can kind of fan into flame, but you start with something.

You don't just materialize a passion.

I'm like, I'd like to be passionate about, and then you just pick something.

I was like, no, I think it's something that's hardwired in and then breathed to life.

And if you don't protect that passion, it can easily get snuffed out.

And so what we want to do is find out what kind of passions are already in us and be able to make room in our hearts and minds for those to grow and really fan them into flame.

I think they're there for a purpose, and I think they're there for a gift.

Passion can do this for you.

It can provide direction for your life.

Man, that's really important.

We've got a lot of energy, but what direction you choose is going to be in alignment, hopefully, with our passion.

So it gives direction.

It gives excitement.

When you're passionate about something, you're clearly excited about it.

And man, that can breathe all kinds of fresh winds into the soul of a man.

It can also provide great accomplishment.

When you're passionate about something, you really focus in on it, and then you go hard on that, and you're able to go a long, long way.

And so it can drive great accomplishment.

It can give a man purpose, and it can also give great happiness to our life.

But though passion is upstream of our disciplines because it informs our disciplines, what's even more upstream of passions should be our philosophies and our theologies.
