The 5 Solas | Sola Gratia - Pastor Matt Baker - 9-27-26

See, if you were alive in the 1400s, you didn't have a Bible in your house.

You were fortunate to live close enough to a church that maybe had a Latin copy of the Bible.

The Latin copy of the Bible is called the Vulgate.

Maybe you were fortunate enough to live near a church that had a Bible, but you weren't allowed to access it yourself.

You couldn't read it yourself.

And so Gutenberg when he invented his printing press.

The reason why he invented the printing press was to make copies of books easier, but not just books in general.

He wanted to make copies of the Bible so people had access to their own Bible.

Matter of fact, you can research this yourself, and you'll find him sharing a somewhat interesting quote today.

But he said there was motivation for for creating the printing press was, and I quote, to get the liquor of the word of the Lord into the mouths of the masses.

That was his motivation, and that was his analogy that he used there, okay? And so he wanted to get the word of God into more hands.

That was his motivation for his ingenuity.

That was his motivation for his creativity.

He wanted to glorify God with that.

And so once they started making more copies of the Bible, more people had access to the Bible, and then guys like Martin Luther copied the Bible, translated it from Latin, into a common tongue of his area, which was Germany.

People like Calvin were copying the Bible into French, and the Bible became more accessible, and then people like you and me were reading the Bible, and they were reading the Bible and looking in Scripture, and then looking at the church, and then looking at the Bible, and then looking at the church and going, this is not lining up.

And one of the ways it wasn't lining up was around this doctrine of grace.
