In today's news, President Trump reversed the Pentagon's plan to livestream the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan after bipartisan backlash. Meanwhile, Russia's FSB…
So firstly, President Trump announced on Truth Social on Dec- that the December 3rd firing squad execution of the Fort Hood shooter, Nidal Malik Nassar, Hasan, sorry, at Fort Leavenworth will go ahead as scheduled but will not be live-streamed, reversing a plan by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that was announced last week.
The U-turn follows bipartisan backlash, including House Speaker Mike Johnson warning it could become a terrorist recruiting tool, and an open letter from more than 40 retired generals and admirals saying that it would turn Hasan into a martyr.
Hasan was a former Army psychiatrist who killed thirteen people in two thousand and nine, and said he acted to protect the Taliban.
He faces the first US military execution since nineteen sixty-one, with only victims' families allowed to watch in person.
The, the idea that this was gonna be live-streamed was insane, to be completely honest.
And there were so many, like, logistical things that probably meant it would never go ahead.
But even claiming that it, you know, should go ahead or even possibly could be live-streamed is just insane on its own.
The execution by firing squad is already controversial enough without the idea that it's gonna be, like, put on video for the world to see.
I think Hegseth's idea was that it would turn into a public messaging thing, but yeah, I don't think so.
I think it would've very easily become propaganda used by jihadists as a, um, recruiting tool.
