And, you know, the U.S. and its allies were humiliated in a not dissimilar way in Afghanistan when they tried to take on the Taliban forces as well and learned that trying to do that with air power alone in mountainous areas with fighters that have been carrying out that, have been fighting that kind of conflict for decades.

a major challenge.

So you have this engagement.

I think it's an extension of Trump policy that says we're willing to engage with anyone, be it Hamas or Iran or the Taliban and now the Houthis.

We're willing to try to sit with you to try to find some sort of diplomatic off-ramp to a conflict that we don't really want to engage in militarily.

But it risks what one Arab official I spoke with said, changing the status of the Houthis to this illegitimate actor, to one that is a part of the international community that can secure meetings with U.S. officials.

And regardless of the fact that Donald Trump was part and parcel of the reason we were in this situation with the Taliban to begin with, Right.

I mean, let's remember who made the deal.

Let's remember who essentially cemented the date of withdrawal.

Let's remember who let out 5000 Taliban fighters from being behind bars.

And let's remember who wanted to bring the Taliban to Camp David.

So let's just be very clear eyed about this.

They will try, to your point, to have Joe Biden suffer the consequences politically and to try to hang this around the necks of Democrats in 2022.
