The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has canceled hundreds of thousands of Affordable Care Act marketplace enrollments covering more than 760,000 people, alleging those enrollments were fraudulent.
CMS says the action is expected to return roughly $2.2 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies.
At a news conference Tuesday, Vance pointed to a fraud ring involving 40 brokers as one example, saying they enrolled 50,000 people in ACA coverage.
He said many of those enrollees did not meet citizenship or income requirements or did not exist.
We had a system in this country that rewarded brokers, that made people rich for enrolling fake people in programs that are meant to ensure that our fellow citizens have healthcare.
The administration says it is reviewing another 440,000 people who may also have been improperly enrolled.
CMS has also issued termination notices to hundreds of agents and brokers over alleged violations of marketplace rules, and the agency is imposing a temporary moratorium on new broker registrations for the 2027 plan year.
The administration says the actions are intended to prevent fraud, protect consumers, and ensure that federal subsidies go only to people who qualify for them.
