#051 - Phil Briscoe

You had to have good sales people that you know who they're talking about.

Followed by an experienced buyer, a proper experienced warehouse guy.

And Darryl that used to run the warehouse for me was tremendous in terms of his ability.

to produce the figures I wanted to see.

In fact, I used to say, that's impossible.

You know, the amount of turnover we've done, you must have more of a stock deficit than you're showing me.

He said, no, that's what it actually is.

And the auditors would have checked that.

So he did a good job.

In other words, things weren't going out where they shouldn't have been going out.

He was in full control of it.

Where did it get to at its best

for you, Phil?

Where did Maver get

to? Do you mean in terms of turnover or

what? Well, in terms of...

definitely turnover i'd love to know that but also in terms of you enjoying it the most or where you saw it in its very best light

well i'll start with saying um that in the 80s 90s um and early 2000s were the best times of the fishing tackle trade ever ever uh you know Although there was discounts being given out, nobody can stop themselves from doing discounts.

It's illegal to say to somebody you can't sell at that price.

You know, I got my knuckles wrapped by the Office of Fair Trading for sending letters out and saying, I'm going to close your account if you don't stop giving that discount away.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah, and it upset me.

And then I thought at the end of the day, well, I proved the point.

And my retailers know I'm on their side.

I'm trying to stop unnecessary discounts.
