FBI cyber leader details bureau’s first unclassified cyber strategy

How does this strategy reflect the current state of cyber threats?

Yeah, I talked about how the FBI is focused on this broad range of threats.

You know, if you turn to just cybercrime, of course, you have kind of ransomware as this persistent threat now that's been around for roughly a decade.

You have cryptocurrency being used as part of different types of cybercrimes.

And the FBI is really focused on that aspect of it as well, the financial aspect of cybercrime.

Then you have fraudsters and synthetic identity and things like that, where folks are using synthetic identity to steal and cause other issues.

And so that's where the FBI is focused.

But then you also look to kind of more of the nation state perspective.

really concerning threats to critical infrastructure.

In early August, cyber attacks targeted water utilities across 12 U.S. states and in some cases disrupted operational systems at those water utilities.

And so the FBI is really focused across the board on those threats, but those critical infrastructure threats are a big deal for the FBI and a range of other agencies.

In addition to the new strategy, Leatherman also announced an initiative called Secure 2027, where the FBI is working with other agencies and industry to strengthen the defenses of critical infrastructure systems that could be targeted by China in advance of a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

That's typically referred to as defense critical infrastructure.

It's, you know, power grids, water systems, transportation infrastructure that supports the U.S. military and defense infrastructure.

So really, there's this whole range of threats that are We haven't even talked about AI that the FBI is really focused on.
