So this week, the creepiest thing comes from northeastern Brazil, where police say they have captured a suspected serial killer who spent years doing something that sounds less like modern criminal evasion and more like the premise of a particularly unpleasant folktale.

He's 33 years old, and locals call him the Mosquito because of his thin, frail build.

But Brazilian authorities say the relatively unimposing nickname disguises something considerably more disturbing.

Da Silva is accused of involvement in 16 murders during just the past three months around Mulungu, an isolated region in the state of Paraiba.

According to investigator Douglas Garcia, Da Silva had become exceptionally difficult to catch because he essentially disappeared into the landscape.

He reportedly lived in makeshift camps hidden in thick vegetation, emerging and retreating into terrain he understood considerably better than the people hunting him.

Worse, investigators initially struggled to recognize that seemingly disconnected killings might belong to the same man.

Police say the pattern became clear after the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old in a public square.

De Silva reportedly claims that his victims were criminals and describes himself as fighting a personal war.

Investigators say the evidence doesn't support his claim that he targeted only criminals, and police are now examining whether additional killings may be connected to him.

Authorities also say De Silva claimed his first murder occurred when he was just 13 years old.

But somehow, the arrest itself is the detail that pushes the story completely over the edge.

Cut off from the forest camp where he normally hid, investigators say he attempted one final disguise.

When police found him, the alleged serial killer known as the Mosquito was reportedly wearing a black dress with white stripes, a wig, and painted fingernails, and in his arms was a baby that wasn't his.

According to Garcia, De Silva had apparently taken the unrelated child as part of his desperate attempt to evade detection.

Authorities have released few additional details about the baby while the investigation continues.

16 alleged murders, a fugitive living in improvised camps deep in the Brazilian forest, a disguise, an unrelated baby, and investigators now wondering whether the crimes they've connected to one man represent the entire story or merely the portion they've discovered so far.
