Kath McGowan had run and won twice in 2013 and 2016, beating Sophie Mirabella on each occasion.

And Cass, well, when Helen Haynes won in 2019, when she won and when she was elected as the independent member for Indi, it was the first time in Australian political history that an independent woman that an independent, retiring independent, was succeeded by another independent in the same seat.

Indi had been a Liberal Party stronghold for a long time, but before that, the Nats dominated, and Black Jack McEwen, the rusty man who used to have prime ministers for lunch and dinner, and leader of the National Party, Black Jack McEwen, he's a member for Indi for 13 years before resuming his career as a member for Murray.

In 2019, Kath McGowan, the independent sitting member, wanted to retire and she provided the community group known as Voices for Indi, the community group turned political backer, that they would need to find a suitable candidate or she would retire if there was a suitable candidate.

Like many young people from the regions, I moved to the city to study, training as a nurse and midwife at St Vincent's Hospital.

But the pull of regional life brought me back to northeast Victoria where I settled in Chiltern and at just 26 became matron of the Chiltern Bush Nursing Hospital.

Yeah, so Helen then worked at Wangaranda Hospital where she led the midwifery services and helped build one of Australia's longest running rural midwifery programs.

She holds a master's degree in public health and obtained a PhD from Uppsala University in Sweden.

Helen married Phil Haynes in November 1986, and they live on a beef farm outside Wangaratta, and they've raised three children.
