is the transition, we would say, from the first table of the Ten Commandments, which is love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
And the first relationship that you... enter into the world having is the relationship with your parents.
And also not only, it is a nice bridge though, you know, Nick, between the first table and the second table, because the parents are the first authority.
Obviously the New Testament, Paul picks this up, says this is the first commandment that accompanies it with a promise.
And there's a lot we can talk about there in terms of application, in terms of our culture and our society.
So just to say honor, this is a command that covers the entirety of our natural life, but may look different in terms of application when you're a young child, when you're an adult, when you're out of the home, when you have aging parents.
Nick, things you would add there and then kind of how you explain the text and ways you kind of went about that.
I mean, straight out the gate with listen to your father's teaching and do not forsake your mother's instructions.
And a major reason for that is what John's already mentioned is that your first and most fundamental relationship on the planet is with an authority figure or two authority figures and how you learn to relate to authority is extremely, I mean, it's determinative of the rest of your life because the person who disobeys father and mother will disobey a teacher and, uh, coach and law enforcement and ultimately god and so the language in proverbs is apocalyptic you know if you don't listen to your father and mother it's going to lead you into destruction and that's not just a temporary destruction this is this is eternal condemnation i think and so that that's a big piece of this is that when we're talking about fathers and mothers we're not just talking about practical parenting advice although There's a lot there that can be said.
Ultimately, we're parenting, though, with eschatology in mind, because we want our kids to stand before a judgment seat one day.
John, as you obviously preach a text like this, a verse like this, and you have the predominant audience you have are adults, right? You have it sprinkled in.
How are you thinking through, how do I speak to kids? How do I speak to parents? How do I encourage them, obviously, to take this seriously so they can teach it to their children? How are you sort of balancing that and working through that?
