Preaching Through The Ten Commandments, The 2nd Commandment

And let's look at the Second Commandment.

John, tell us, uh, if you don't have it memorized at home, you might be fighting for it, uh, to be on the walls in the schools, but you don't know what it says.

Woo.

Tell us what the Second Commandment says.

"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments."

So of course, that is not a commandment that any of us or any of our people struggle to, to break, right?

I would say that's false.

Okay.

Why would you say that's false? Do you have a lot of carved images in your bedroom?

No.

But I think, uh, we- where do we get the word imagination from? We get it from the word image.

I think that there's a ton of us who run the risk and the temptation of worshiping a God that we fashioned after our own imagination rather than the God that's been revealed to us in the Bible.
