Preaching Through the Ten Commandments, The 1st Commandment

I mean, what is the first commandment, John? The first commandment,

so I think that we do need to make some differentiation between the first and second commandment because sometimes they get lumped together.

I can't remember who said this.

The first commandment is a command to worship the right God.

The second commandment is to worship the right God in the right way.

Right.

And so the first commandment is, no other gods before me.

And then, obviously, we talked about this in the introductory episode as well.

It's built on the premise of, hey, I'm the Lord your God who rescued you out of slavery in Egypt.

Therefore, you have no other gods before me.

And so, obviously— It's a pluralistic culture, very similar to people are going to see like the Odyssey or whatever.

It's a culture that believes in multiple gods.

And he's saying, no, I'm the one true God.

There are no other gods.

You shouldn't worship anybody but me.

Yeah, it's a straight up statement of monotheism.

No other gods before my face, not even like in resident, not first among gods.

That's a real clear monotheistic statement.

Yeah, no hierarchy.

None.
