Kendall HansonJeff KingA firestorm is swirling around what appears to be a controversial remark about First Nations by the conservative candidate for Juan de Fuca Malahat.
But as Mary Griffin tells us, Mike Hicks says his remarks were taken out of context and his record shows years of support for First Nations.

And just yesterday, a candidate talking about the need to conquer First Nations.
So that would be five.
You know, it's just the extremism, the unpredictability, the cuts and the chaos of the Conservatives continue.

EB's referring to this video featuring Mike Hicks, the conservative candidate in Juan de Fuca, Malahat.

The clip was posted to social media by Souk Nation councillor Deborah Lazar.
Okay, Mike, that's fine.

Lazar wrote that Hicks' comments were profoundly offensive and deeply concerning.

But Hicks says the video's been taken out of context, that he was talking about historical events between First Nations and government.
In Canada, you can only occupy First Nations lands if you defeat them or conquer them in a battle or through negotiation and make a treaty.
And we did neither.
We just moved in.

Hicks says the clip appears to show him being dismissive of First Nations, but he says he was actually speaking about the importance of negotiations.
And I'm 100% behind that.
And second of all, I'm disappointed in my colleagues or my fellow politicians that are slamming me.
Can you respond to the most recent comments from Mike Hicks? And did your party do enough vetting of its candidates?
