Sheriff Allen joins Bob Clark on the Morning Show to update us on what is happening at B.C.S.O.!! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
And as we've talked with you about many times over the years in terms of fentanyl and how it's impacting our community and the work that you're already doing on that, the county commission did vote last night to approve a resolution that basically declares a public health emergency due to the fentanyl crisis.
First off, what does that mean in terms of moving forward? Does it mean more resources? And if so, how?
Yeah, it does mean more resources, specifically in terms of what the county commissioners need as far as what's out at the Metropolitan Detention Center for treatment.
And also it opens up funding either federally, locally, and also on the state side.
But it alerts whoever the next governor is also of, hey, Bernalillo County will most likely need funding.
You are correct, but there's huge gaps, which I said at the press conference yesterday.
There's huge gaps within the system to why people are reoffending and not getting the help that they need.
We're just not going to be able to arrest everybody, especially the low-hanging fruit of people that are addicted.
Or if you do arrest them, they're back out within 24 hours and back on the streets doing more fentanyl.
When a judge says, you're obviously addicted, you committed a felony, we're going to release you, and then you need to go to a drug rehab program.
But what they're telling me is, if it's not open for another 30 or 60 days, we're telling that person, hey, in that time where you're released, go ahead and commit some more felonies to feed your addiction, and then you're getting deeper into the criminal justice system.
That's why I threw shade at the system itself, not judges specifically this time.
And I had a little argument with someone last night at the county commission meeting.
