Season 4 of Tech Startup Stories kicks off with serial founder Jim Edmondson, co-founder of PressWhisper, to explore the problem that led him to rethink traditional PR. After experiencing first-hand…
Jim EdmondsonGuestNatalie BinnsHostso you said something I mean you said a lot of things that are really interesting but really makes me think a lot of people assume and I see a lot of content online today that the way to financial freedom is to run your own business and it's almost assumed that it's an easy thing to do when you know you've highlighted and I'm a business owner and I know it is that knife edge it is hard it's not for the faint hearted to build a business.
And there's this assumption that it's all gonna be sunshine and rainbows and you can be your own boss and you can go surfing and climbing and doing all those things.
There's a lot of late nights thinking about cashflow and chasing invoices and managing people and suppliers and all those things.
And I'd love to hear from you, you know, what your perspective is and why you keep going as a serial entrepreneur rather than the kind of.

So I think it comes back to the starting point of that question from all right is that.

As a society, all the way back to the Roman times, there's always been people selling the fool's gold.

I haven't seen anybody... create amazon books and then suddenly they're millionaires and stuff i'm sure there are some people but the people who are really wealthy from that are the people selling those courses who have actually managed to sell the courses so they're not actually wealthy from selling the books anyway so i and and there is this thing as well that it's kind of overnight success people are kind of feeling more and more there's overnight success that from all the businesses that i've been involved in or everybody i mentor Overnight success only looks like it's overnight success because nobody's seen the seven years before that of grind, right? So your question was, how do I manage that? Why wouldn't I go for the more structured PAYE route? Is that the question?
Yeah, I mean, you've been there, you've been around the block, you've, you know, you've built startups and you've got that kind of interest in trying new things and innovation.
Why not kind of have an easy life in, OK, I'm not going to worry about building businesses and, you you know do i'm just going to focus on taking my salary doing my nine to five and the rest is my time

so it's a really easy one for me right i would rather and look i'd be i'm fortunate in that we've had like i said some successes and way more failures but i would rather rack up credit cards and sit there like freaking out about how i'm going to pay for them right and Because I want to go surfing, right? I'm willing to take that risk because I want that lifestyle, right? I just couldn't imagine being told that I've got to turn up to an office at a certain time or be on a deadline.

It's something where I really push hard against because it just doesn't work for me.
