The labor story that hung over the start of this season has now a long-term resolution.

The USL, USL Players Association, has ratified a new five-year collective bargaining agreement, the CBA covering both the USL Championship and future USL Premier.

The agreement is effective immediately, runs through the end of the 2030 season with provisions for extension.

So what actually changes for players in this new deal? Well, One of the biggest ones, 12-month contracts.

USL championship player contracts will move from the current 10-month structure to a standardized 12-month structure.

That gives players more consistent year-round employment rather than contracts built just around the playing season.

Minimum base compensation now for USL championship players will be 42,000 in 2026.

The minimum will increase annually over the life of the agreement The CBA has also created a separate entry-level contract structure for early career players.

Every championship club will now be required to offer players health insurance at or above an Affordable Care Act ACA Silver Plan level.

More importantly, health insurance costs will no longer count towards the minimum compensation.

This league... and player associations will also continue working towards a standardized group health plan across the league, better medical and player care standards.

The agreement also raises standards around player care, that's certified athletic training requirements, regular physical therapy services, access to massage therapy, enhanced medical and professional standards across clubs.

And back to that group licensing and commercial rights, the name, image, and likeness rights, the NIL, the agreement expands player name, NIL rights across the championship, USL League One, the Gainbridge Super League, and USL Premier, so that players will also participate in certain revenues generated through league use of their licenses, including things like soccer, video games, eFootball, league sold merchandise.

They didn't include essentially what it was, because I know they were willing to pay $125,000, according to last time, if that figure increased, possibly, but maybe we'll get more details as the story unfolds.

The new CBA also establishes annual prize pools for the winners of the USL Championship Players Shield and future USL Premier Players Shield.

The CBA already established compensation and employment standards for USL Premier before its planned launch in 2028.

Minimum base compensation in Premier will begin at $67,500 and that amount will also increase over time.

So USL Premier will launch with its labor framework already in place rather than having to negotiate those standards after the league begins.
